Medical Acupuncture

Medical acupuncture is a therapeutic practice that involves the insertion of fine needles into specific anatomical points on the body to alleviate pain and promote healing. This technique is rooted in ancient traditions but is supported by contemporary research, allowing it to be integrated into modern physiotherapy. By targeting trigger points in the soft tissue, medical acupuncture aims to enhance blood flow, and stimulate the nervous system. It has been shown to be effective for a variety of conditions, including chronic pain, muscle tension, and stress-related disorders, making it a valuable addition to comprehensive treatment plans in pain management and pelvic health.

Where appropriate, we will offer acupuncture alongside your physiotherapy treatment.

Benefits of Medical Acupuncture

  • Fewer Side Effects: Compared to traditional medication therapies, acupuncture typically presents fewer side effects, offering a safer alternative for pain management and overall treatment.

  • Pain Relief: Medical acupuncture is highly effective for alleviating various types of pain, including chronic back pain, migraines, and joint pain by stimulating the body's natural pain-relief mechanisms.

  • Lowers stress - Medical acupuncture can help to lower cortisol levels. High cortisol levels during stressful periods heighten the feeling of pain in the body.

  • Reduced Inflammation: Acupuncture treatments can help decrease inflammation, promoting faster recovery from injuries and chronic conditions.

  • Muscle Relaxation: Needling techniques promote relaxation in tense muscles, improving mobility and reducing stiffness.

  • Enhanced Recovery: Athletes and individuals recovering from surgery often utilize medical acupuncture for quicker healing and improved performance due to its ability to increase blood flow and stimulate repair processes.

  • Improved Functionality: Regular acupuncture sessions can enhance overall physical function, making it a valuable treatment option for conditions that limit movement and daily activities.

  • Complementary Treatment: It works effectively alongside other physiotherapy treatments, enhancing the outcomes of standard rehabilitation practices.

What to Expect from a Session

Your physiotherapist may offer you medical acupuncture as a part of your individualised treatment plan, and only where deemed necessary and appropriate. Prior to starting, your physiotherapist will explain the acupuncture process, including the placement of fine needles into specific points on the body, designed to stimulate the body’s natural healing process, and promote pain relief. The number of needles will depend on your specific need. Should this be the first time you are receiving medical acupuncture as a part of your care, we will use only a minimal number of needles.

Patients may feel a slight sensation as the needles are inserted, but discomfort is generally minimal. After the needles are in place, they will be left in for a minimum of five minutes, during which patients often report feelings of relaxation and well-being. Should the therapist deem necessary, we may use electro-acupuncture, which sends an electrical stimulant through the needles to enhance and intensify the treatment.

We generally advise patients not to drive 20-30 minute following a medical acupuncture session. Some patients may feel tired on the evening of the medical acupuncture session.
